Single File is a non-profit making walking club

Single File does walks most Sunday morning

and during the Summer does the occasional mid-week evening walks.

Walks are organized by members for the members and cover Herts, Beds and Bucks. Each walk costs £1.00 and their is no membership fee.

Walks are usually 5-6 miles and now and again we do longer walks of 8 miles or more. In addition too our regular walks we also do some social events.

Newsletters are printed every 2 months and obtained by

going on one of the walks or via e-mail.

All walks start at 11am prompt, unless otherwise stated.
Long walks usually start at 10:30am prompt.

Please arrive 10 - 15 minutes before the walk to allow time to put your boots on and to meet the other walkers. We like to start our walks promptly, you arrive late, we will not wait. So please allow enough time when joining us on our walks.

Single File is a Singles walking club and is not geared for families. If you have children that you want to bring along on a walk you MUST check with the walk leader prior to the start of the walk.

If you wish to take your dog on a walk you MUST check with the walk leader prior to the start of the walk. Dogs must be kept under control at all times.

RESPONSIBILITY

We’d like to take this opportunity to remind you to take responsibility for your own safety whilst out and about as the group cannot be held liable for accidents or loss.

Benefits of Walking
Walking on a regular basis contributes to a healthier lifestyle. Walking has been shown to help reduce the risk of cardio-vascular disease, help control weight and strengthen bones.  It is an activity that is accessible to all ages as a way of keeping active. Walking is a free form of travel and exercise that is open to everyone regardless of age, sex, religion, or culture.

Walking ranks alongside jogging for its physiological and psychological benefits. You even burn the same number of calories - about 100 for every mile you jog or walk along a flat, tarmac surface. The only difference is the speed that you take to cover the distance. If you walk over softer surfaces such as grass or sand and add in a few hills, you will burn more calories per mile.

Walking can help to boost your brainpower and prevent mental decay and memory loss. The study published in Nature showed that the walkers did far better in mental tests than the other groups. Any prolonged aerobic exercise, such as walking, increases blood flow and oxygen to the brain which helps it become more alert and efficient. In particular, the frontal areas of the brain (which are responsible for logical thinking, planning and memory) were specifically influenced by walking.

Rather than reach for a cup of coffee or a sugary snack, a 20 minute brisk walk will help to reduce stress... not add to it. Any stressful event - or the caffeine in a cup of coffee or tea - will trigger the release of adrenalin and cortisol. These hormones are fine in small amounts, but for optimum health, they need to be neutralised. During aerobic exercise, such as walking, a range of beta endorphins are released by the brain which have a calming and soothing effect.

You can start walking today, and no one has to teach you how to do it.

A Little Bit of History
Single File was started between 1995 / 1996 (exact date not known) by a Richard and a few friends that did walks on a regular basis. The club went through several name changes and it was eventually agreed to call the club Single File, which has remained our name ever since the early days.

Future Programmes
Offers of walks, especially in areas we haven’t walked in recently, as well as offers to
host events of whatever kind, would be very welcome.

Note:
Name, Address and Telephone number (landline) must
be provided to receive a newsletter.

We shall only continue to send a newsletter via email

if you attend our walks. If we don't see you for a few months
